At first when I read this passage it wasn't as obvious because I didn't know what I was really looking for, but after I re-read it, it became clear that she clearly distinguished between her personal thoughts and thoughts of others. It sometimes is hard to make it clear who idea you are talking about, but the templates from this section will make it a lot easier.

Chapter 5 exercise 1
When reading the passage from the historian Julie Charlip, it was for the most part easy to identify between her referring to other people's ideas and referring to her own. She separated the "they say" from the "I say" very well. For example she refers to views of others in the article when she writes, Marx and Engels wrote..., I once asked a sociology professor what he thought... his definition, and the average American will tell you. When adding her own input she makes it obvious by making various statements such as, I find myself..., But I always felt that..., I'm sure thats what..., and As a historian...

Chapter 4 exercise 1
She first states what the issue is, then gives two opinions on the problem. She talks about how Bowles and Gintis said that there are rewards for different behaviors that come from the different social classes. On the other hand, Bernstein, Bourdieu, and Apple talk about how certain knowledge and skills are favored to the upper classes more then the working classes. When you read this section of the writing you could possibly assume that she is agreeing with the main problem stated in the first sentence of the reading, but then she goes into talking about how there hasn't been any huge attempts to research the issue. You could easily conclude that she disagrees on the situation because she doesn't feel like she has enough background information on the problem to believe anything anyone says. Overall I would say that Jean Anyon has an agree/disagree standpoint on the situation.

Exercise 7j
- In terms of layout and design Cassidy Trom was not going for the typical boring research paper that you would expect in an english class. Instead this paper brings in large titles, pictures, captions, and enlarged quotes to clearly show her main topic. It is very unlikely that you would get bored when reading this paper because even though there are words surrounding everything, the pictures help explain what is being talked about. Her layout seems like it is more for a newspaper then an english class. This style of writing is probably the biggest help when it comes to the emphasizing part. If you were to write a typical paper with no pictures or large headlines, then it would be harder to show what your emphasis is, but with the capability of using pictures, the main points are obvious.
- This layout will affect how the audience reads it because they will read what is most interesting first. Like for example the title is large and bolded, obviously I am going to take the time to read the title because it must be important if bolded. Normally when reading a regular research paper I don't pay as much attention to the title because it is just like everything else. The pictures will be looked at as soon as you flip to the next page, which might not be a bad thing because it gives a some what preview of what you are about to read about. I find the large quotes interesting because it shows you that the writer feels like this is important and that we should comprehend it and understand how it works in with the paper. The way the paper is set up also breaks up the reading so it is not all one long paper. This may be beneficial because instead of getting bored from what you are reading, the reader may actually enjoy reading what the paper is about.
- If the fancy stuff was removed, the paper would just turn into an ordinary, boring research paper. You would have to have some other way to make your paper stand out from everyone else's. Without the emphasis of all the stuff added, this paper would not be as exciting and wouldn't be as attention grabbing as it was before. The content of the paper wouldn't change at all, and it would still be a great paper, it's just the point would not be proven as easily as it would have with the pictures and bolded sections.

This film allowed myself to actually hear what the characters sounded like. Instead of imagining what Marjane, her parents, her grandmother, friends, neighbors, etc. sounded like, we heard them for ourselves and were able to compare what we heard to what we previously thought. For instance during the film we actually saw how bratty Marjane was, which was perfectly portrayed in scenes such as when she tried to attack the young boy with screws. Another aspect we were able to see was how Marjane felt she knew everything about the war. It was funny to listen to her explanations about the war because she did not really know all the facts, so she just restated everything she heard, even if it wasn’t right.
By visualizing the characters and hearing them instead of looking at them on a piece of paper it allowed you to picture everything better. The cool thing was that this entire movie took place in French, resulting in sub-titles, which isn’t as bad as you think it would be. I did not mind that I had to read subtitles because if I didn’t hear the characters in Marjane’s natural language I think it would have taken away from her real experience. Along with the sub-titles, if you paid attention to the music in the background, you would hear how perfectly it went along with the scenes. For example whenever something terrible happened, there was either complete silence that set the mood or gloomy depressing music.
The special effects for this movie worked perfectly. By choosing a black and white, animated theme the directors chose a path that related to the graphic novel. If they were to choose real actors, I think that the point of the movie would have been ruined. According to the A.O. Scott, “In this age of Pixar and “Shrek,” it is good to be reminded that animation is rooted not in any particular technique, but in the impulse to bring static images to life” (The New York Times). Scott’s point is saying that instead of bringing in characters that were not going to be able to portray Marjane’s image, they decided to be as simple as possible. By using animated characters, it shows everyone that you do not need all the big time actors and actresses in the movie to get your point across. Also the fact that the entire movie was in black and white besides the few scenes in the airport proves a point that they are trying to make it more and more like a comic book.
One problem that I had was the transitions that occurred. During the entire movie I felt like it was choppy and not smooth. The poor transitions occurred more often in the beginning, but when it happened it was blatantly obvious. Once a scene was over it seemed like they would just pause for a split second then move on. It could just be my perception, but I felt like these poor transitions happened for a good majority of the movie. Eisner would argue that, “ …when there is need to compress time, a greater number of panels are used. The action then becomes more segmented, unlike the action that occurs in the larger, more conventional panels” (30). He basically is saying that even though it may have appeared choppy, the director could have done it purposely. There is not a lot of time given to movies, so the idea of jumping from point to point in the beginning could easily have been on purpose. Who knows, maybe the director was trying to make it as much like a comic book as possible.

His point is that even though we don’t think about movies in this way, it is actually a comic, just sped up. It wasn’t like a lot of movies that were made based on books that didn’t follow the books storyline very well, but of course it did leave some things out. A movie is maximum of about two and a half hours long: a short time span to fit a lot of information in. For the most part I thought that the directors picked the correct scenes to portray, and filmed them almost exactly like how the book illustrated them. Unlike some of the other movies that were made from comic books, Persepolis stayed true to the original graphic novel. Everything from the characters to specific instances that occurred in the book was visually correct in the movie. I thought it was cool how during the movie I saw almost exact pictures from the book, which again emphasized how well the movie worked off of the book.

Persepolis Movie Review

Persepolis Movie Review

Suggestions for Writing ex. 2
Both critics seemed to have extremely different ideas about the movie "Spider Man 2". Todd Gilchrist thought that the sequel did not deserve any of the praise that it received, while Robert Ebert thought that the movie was absolutely amazing. They mainly disagreed on many things, but there was a couple times where they agreed. For the majority of both of these reviews, both critics gave an overall summary, talked about the characters, and then gave their own view on what the movie should do in comparison to the actual comic book. Todd Gilchrist thought that although the movie was not terrible as a whole, it needed areas of improvement. He went about explaining this by tearing apart the film piece by piece. In a way I guess you could expect this from a critic who did not really like the movie. Of course someone who loved the movie wouldn't want to intentionally find flaws that made it not as perfect as they thought it was.
In the summary, Gilchrist seems to think that the main character, Peter (Tobey Maguire), finds his life becoming not as exciting in the sequel, while Ebert thinks Peter thrives due to additions in the script. Probably what stood out the most to me when reading the second critique was how Roger thought that "Spider Man 2" was unlike the other comic book related movies, which veered away from the original comic books. He thought that these movies should not only focus on superpowers and the main points people think of when they think of super-heroes, but instead focus on what the original books thought was important. He felt that the effects were not over the top and actually contributed to the movie, making you feel that the objects were real and not just "robot" like.
Overall you could say that the two critics differed in their opinions on how a sequel should evolve. Gilchrist thought that they should be exciting and keep you on your toes by adding new emotions and deepening the plot, while Ebert thought that the sequels should be less high tech and more like the original books. If i was to pick someone to agree with, I would say that I would want to take both sides and make them into one. Agreeing with Gilchrist that these kinds of movies should not be dragged on, but also agreeing with Ebert that they should not be over packed with special effects and over the top characters. When reading the two reviews we see how the critics use similar methods to review the movie, which leads us to seeing their different viewpoints. Not everyone is going to agree that a movie is perfect, but the only thing that can be taken out of these response is the fact that there is always room to change, even when someone thinks it is the best piece of work.

Persepolis Movie vs. Book
On Wednesday when we were about to start the film I thought that it was going to be a full out movie with like real actors and actresses. To my surprise it was in basically the same format that the book was in, except all the voices were in French and you had to read subtitles. I was not upset that there were subtitles because I am used to reading them due to having to watch lots of movies in my French class in high school. In a way I thought it added to the movie because you got to see a different side of Marjane, her cultural French side, then we saw in the book. At first I thought the comic scenes were stupid because it was basically the same thing we just did, but as the movie continued I found myself liking it more and more. Although they left out some scenes, for the most part the major scenes were included.
Unlike the book, during the film you did not really have time to reflect on what happens. When reading the book you got to read the words, look at the pictures, then reflect, but in the movie it was like a ton of information just bombarded you all at once. Also in the movie I feel that it is choppy and just random scenes from the book placed into motion picture format. The transitions are probably the part that would need the most work on because when they decide to move on from one scene it is like a small pause instead of a smooth transition.
Although the movie has some flaws, I think that overall it gives us a better picture of what is going on in Iran. Now, instead of reading and imaging what is going on, we actually get to grasp more then what we got from just looking at the pictures. For instance, we see actually how bratty Marjane is and how cruel the environment is during the war period. Instead of imagining what Marjane sounded like, now I have better description that helps connect my book thoughts of her to what I see in the movie. I don't think I would have liked the movie as much as I do, if I hadn't read the book before. I think reading the book before we watched a movie was a great idea because we got to understand what was going on and get out own vision of everything. The movie then was just to further our knowledge and give us a motion vision instead of just pictures. I am now really interested in the film and am excited for us to finish it tomorrow. In a way I am hoping it paints a better picture in my mind of the ending because after reading the ending in the book I was disappointed. Who knows, maybe the movie will leave me on a better note then the book.

Reflection of Persepolis
Persepolis was not what I was expecting at all. After just finishing the book I look back and realize that before I started reading, I had a completely different view of what went on in Iran during this time. Before, I saw the problems in Iran only in the way the media portrayed them, but now after reading Persepolis, I can see a completely different view point of what actually happened. From Marjane Satrapi's stand point, we saw a child's perspective of the war. In a way I think this perspective can be a lot easier to understand. For instance if we were to read a regular novel about the revolution in Iran, we would most likely be ten times more lost and would not understand it as well. The graphic novel approach was appropriate because we saw the war in picture form, which put visions in our head of what actually happened. For instance when they would show the people getting beat up and stabbed during a demonstration, it showed us how violent everything got in Iran.
This young girl in the story goes against all of the stereotypes that have been shared about Iran. Although we read the story from the child's perspective, we still got the majority of the amount of information we would have gotten if it was written in any other format. The comics are relevant because they allow you to read the words, see the image, grasp the concept, then move on to the next box. These boxes can be in any format to get their point across, for example the boxes that take up the entire page. If you think about it though, these boxes are perfect because it shows you that it is important and gives you the appropriate amount of time to think about why they made the box so big. Also there are boxes with just pictures in them to allow you to imagine what they would say. These boxes can vary so much that it adds to the excitement of reading a graphic novel. I think if this book was not in a comic format that it would be a terrible read, but instead because of the comics I was able to grasp the information they wanted me to get from the book and actually learn something.

Off Topic Blog: Michael Phelps
So about Michael Phelps...
I found it shocking that these pictures emerged because when you think of him you think, role model. When I was on CNN.com I read an article where he apologized. I think that he spoke really well and although he did do a bad thing that was against the rules, he at least took the blame and apologized to everyone. People are saying that he is going to be kicked out of the olympics forever, which I think is stupid. Think about all the athletes that do steroids, which in my opinion are worse. Michael Phelps is a role model to everyone, and although he messed up I think that he learned a lesson and will never do it again. Being a fan of Michael, I don't think he should be kicked out of the olympics forever, but instead punished in a different way. By apologizing and taking full responsibility he knows what he did was wrong and I doubt it will ever happen again.

Teenagers today, if asked how they feel about comics, would most likely say that they are childish and common sense. They say that comics are not meant to deal with real life problems and serious issues in the real world, but in reality they can have hidden meanings within them. Although comics have a lot of short sentences and pictures, if you read beyond the "lines" then you can learn a lot more. McCloud says that comics revolve around sequential art and is a juxtaposed pictorial. While similarly, Eisner says that comics take on the characteristic of language along with sequential art. He differs from McCloud by saying that it communicates in a language that relies on a visual experience common to both the creator and audience. I used to believe that comics were stupid, but now I cannot help but think that they are much more involved then I ever thought they were. I would say that if given the chance they deserve, people will see that there is much more to them then meets the eye.

Eisner and McCloud responses
I actually got the opportunity to read a graphic novel in high school. Throughout my senior year we read Maus. My teacher made us read the graphic novel then analyze it by answering questions about specific parts of the story. That was my first experience with graphic novels, and to my surprise I did not really mind it. In the Eisner piece we had to to read I saw a different part of graphic novels that wasn't taught to me in high school. For instance the author stated how the graphic novel is a different, more creative way to express your writing instead of being a boring person just like the rest of the world. With the different ways to organize thoughts and to express your thoughts, brings reading to a different level. There are so many things you must pay attention to: the word bubbles, pictures, characters, shapes of boxes, ect. Everything comes into play when you are reading a graphic novel. I found it interesting in the Eisner piece how they said the boxes can be different sizes to express different thoughts. If you really think about it there are tons of things that come into play when reading a graphic novel, and you must be prepared to try and capture everything.
In the McCloud reading I found it really interesting that the entire thing was in comic book style. It was cool how he was describing comic books, by writing a comic book. Reading a comic book is ten times more enjoyable then reading just a plain book. I would choose reading a graphic novel over a normal novel any day. When reading a graphic novel I feel like I am not being forced to read it, instead I am reading it because it actually seems interesting. The fact that the ideas are split up into smaller sections along with pictures makes the read so much easier and fun. I found it interesting how McCloud used illustrations within his comic book to describe what he was talking about. Also the idea of being so simple just to get the point across is so cool because if you really think about it, you really can see the true meaning when everything is stripped down and not extremely complicated. At the end when he said that we become the cartoon, I found it interesting because I did not experience that when I was reading Maus, but hopefully I will experience it when reading Persepolis.
After I read over the articles about comics I feel like I already know so much more about comics then I did before. They seem extremely interesting and I am really excited about starting the chapter on comics. The idea of a comic is so complex and interesting, that learning about them won't be boring. Also I am excited to because reading comics aren't nearly as bad as reading normal texts, so hopefully this unit will be more fun then everyone anticipates it to be.

Homework 4.m
Writing has never come easy for me. I struggle to get all the thoughts I want to write about, down in the right order. When I hear I have to write a paper it takes me so much time just to get started. You could say that I have a "fear" of writing papers. My English teacher last semester tore my essays apart, even though I thought they were really decent, so now since I have been at college I seem to take more preparation time before writing my paper. The first thing I try and do is write out an outline. I try to include every thought that I possibly could think of that would work well in my paper. In my outline, my thesis is created, but it never is that strong because I never know the exact direction that my paper is going to go in. I always tell my self to just start writing, which sounds cliche, but it really does help me. As long as I get started writing, I usually can go for a while. All my writing occurs at my desk. If I was anywhere else, say my bed, I would get too distracted. What I find strange, is the fact that I listen to music when I am writing. You would think that it is distracting, but when I can't hear anything in my room or my room mate is talking, I get a lot more accomplished.
When I was younger I remember when I used to have to write out my entire rough draft. Now that I think about it, that sounds like a great idea, but honestly do we have enough time to hand write our papers? To replace the handwriting process I will write my rough draft on my computer, print it out without reading over it and then take my pink pen and mark it up. Also I read the entire paper out loud, which helps me hear my mistakes. I usually find tons of mistakes when proofreading my paper, so I go back into the computer and fix them. When I take my paper to class to get it revised by my peers, I feel confident about the product, but I know that there has to be changes made because it has much better potential.
All the revising sessions that I have attended seem pointless. Don't get me wrong, there are some kids whoare actually there to help you, but for the most part students see this workshopping day as a day off to do whatever they want. It is frustrating because I actually want my peer's response to see what they think I should do to make it better. Every once in a while you will get someone who will mark up your paper and give you good suggestions, but those chances are slim. What I tend to do is look for someone who seems like they care just as much as I do and give my paper to them, hoping they will help me out. After the revising session ends I take my paper back to my room and review their marks. For the most part they are right about a lot of things in my paper, but there are times when I just keep what I originally had. After the revising process I realized that the key to have a good paper is to work on it a little every day. I found if you try to cram all your editing into one day, your bound to miss something. Every day I usually read my paper once looking for mistakes and things to change, and you will be surprised that I find things every time I read it over. It doesn't bother me that I have to read my paper so many times because I know it is just making it better.
My writing has improved so much over the past years, and I hope that it continues to. The writing process that I do, seems pretty straight forward, so a lot of people might be able to follow what I do if they ever needed help getting started. A way I could improve my writing would be to look more carefully at my paper as a whole because my biggest problem would be staying on topic. I know that is what my outline is for, but no matter how much I try to stay on topic, it never really works. By taking this class I hope to learn better workshopping skills that will be extremely beneficial. I know that my writing is nowhere near perfect, but to be successful in college I know that my writing is going to have to keep improving. I plan to sharpen my outlining and organization skills, along with asking for opinions and help throughout the writing process. Hopefully, by the end of this second Freshman English course, my writing will be good enough to get me through college.

Workshopping Homework
1. When I think about a workshop draft I think about a rough draft. The point is to basically get your thoughts down on paper, but not to expect it to be your finished draft. Your paper should be organized, but have room to be revised. You shouldn't worry if the person working on your paper writes all over it because they are just trying to make it better. From what I got out of the reading last night, I noticed it said that when your paper is being revised, don't hesitate to change things because it didn't really take you long to come up with your first draft in the first place. Nobody expects their first draft to be amazing, even though we all wish we did, so editing it isn't the end of the world. When I write my workshop drafts I basically just put my thoughts down on paper and then add more later. The purpose of your paper, I think, should stay consistent throughout your draft and final paper. You may not have all of your complete thoughts yet, but beginning to come up with ideas and sources in your workshop draft would be a good idea. You want to have something valid to work off of, not just any random sentences that have nothing to do with the topic. Your purpose should not really change from your workshop draft to your finished draft, unless you need to change your paper completely. I think your audience though, can be different from your workshop draft to your final draft. This is because when you first start talking about a subject you may think you know who you want to focus your attention on, but in the end your ideas may shift to another audience. It is not big deal if you eventually change who you want to be focusing on, but make sure that you keep it consistent in the end.
2. If I was workshopping on Essay "R" I would be up to helping the author make it a lot better. Everyone agrees that it is not the best paper, but revising it will make it more like a finished copy. First I would tell the author to try and start by making an outline. If he took the ideas that he had in his paper and tried to put them into an outline, then maybe the flow of the paper would be better. The outline would also allow for a clear thesis to be written, basically summing up what he was going to talk about in the rest of the paper. Also I would go and look for as many sentence fragments and mistakes that are obvious. I would try and give some suggestions on ways to make the paper better, by helping with transitions and different ways of saying things. Basically I think if this author set up an outline and organized everything better, his entire paper would be much better. I could possibly start helping set up the outline, but this kid needs to put in more effort to create a finished draft. The people revising your paper are not going to re-write your paper for you, but will give suggestions on to how to get started on improving your work.

Grading essay "R"
When I was reading the essay written about WWE it reminded me of the work shopping that I did in English 1105. I read over the essay and looked for what stood out to me and what seemed like obvious mistakes. Overall I would grade this essay as a B-. It was obvious that the author was trying to get the point across that WWE has changed since the 80's, but the way he went about writing his essay wasn't that great. He had great ideas and lots of information to back up what he was trying to say, but I thought he needed to have better organization. The transitions from one paragraph to another seemed to be lacking and whenever I thought he was going to continue on a topic, it seemed like he jumped to the next idea. There were also a few grammatical mistakes and some sentences that seemed unfinished. An example of a sentence that seemed unfinished would be, "Mainly from its live events, this grossed 295.4 million last year." This sentence could easily be revised to make more sense.
To me this seemed like more of a rough draft then a final copy. The author has a great start to the paper but needs to clean it up. He answered the question that he was focusing his paper on, but the way attacked the question could be more clear. This paper is in no way terrible, but could definitely be improved for the better. The facts that were given are perfect for the paper, but to improve his grade I think he needs to give a stronger introduction and use his facts in a more orderly fashion.

homework assignment 2.h
1. a. The rhetorical situation which represents this text would have to revolve around a political standpoint. Bryan West directed his audience towards people who have not made up their mind about who to vote for. His purpose was to review what Gabriel McVey talked about in his article "Do Not Be Fooled By the Clintons Again." Bryan West wanted to point out certain points of his article and make them clear and help the audience understand what McVey was talking about. The occasion that started the political articles was the 2008 presidential election. Both writers wanted to help people who were unsure of who to vote for make the right decision. West's genre would more likely be on the informative side because unlike Mcvey who is trying to persuade, West is simply explaining and informing you on the information that was stated in the first article.
b. Bryan West's main purpose was to analyze how Gabriel McVey used certain ways to appeal to his audience. Bryan took everything that McVey said and broke it down finding out whether it was appropriate or not. He specifically looked at how McVey used pathos and logos.
c. His audience could also be for people not sure about who to vote for, but also for people looking for responses to the first article and whether they should believe everything Gabriel said or not.
2. a. This article seems like it is more of an informative essay. The author does not really sound like he is trying to persuade anyone, but instead just taking the information from the previous article and explaining and informing the audience about it.
b. During my high school years I had to write plenty informative essay during my many english classes.
c. I have read speeches that are very informative and I have had to review many articles from newspapers and magazines about information then write papers on what I found.
d. The genre that is probably most familiar to me would be informative because I have written many research papers that are extremely informative. I would say I am least familiar with persuasion because if I remember write I only have written maybe two small papers dealing with persuading someone.
3. a. I think the author could have also used a persuasive viewpoint by taking what he thought was wrong with the first article and using that information into trying to persuade the audience either one way or another. The persuasive viewpoint is basically trying to get your audience to either agree or disagree with you. The informative viewpoint is to take facts given to the author and explain to you different ways of thinking about a topic. This author is supposed to inform you and let you make your own decision, while the persuader is trying to persuade you to their side.
4. a. The author could use a narrative genre. He could take all the information that he knew and put it into a story about his experience with the election.
b. A different audience he could direct his attention to would be his family and close friends. This group of people would listen carefully and understand where he was coming from. Also if he wanted to go to a support group to read his article, I think they would be a good audience also.
c. Instead of using a persuasive perspective the author could take all of their ideas and make them extremely strong to try and prove a point to the audience. Instead of trying to persuade someone, the author should just make their viewpoint extremely strong that their audience will just want to agree with them.
5. These genres used in both of the articles could be used anywhere. To me it seems like teacher's would use more of the informative approach. Teacher's seem to do a lot of research, so when they finish their research they could write an article informing everyone about the information they have gathered. Someone who would use a persuasive article could easily be a newspaper writer. A newspaper writer could use the editorial section to try and persuade someone. Genres are used in just about every writing, and by using them you will improve your papers and articles greatly.
